A Tribute to the Quilting Bee

How things can change in a month.  Sometimes for the good and then sometimes not.

Late on the evening of Feb. 1, Worker Bee got a text from his brother saying that their mom had just been diagnosed with cancer.  Cancer of the pancreas, liver, and possibly lungs.  The doctors said 90 days. She stayed with us for four weeks.

This post is so very difficult to write.  I loved my mother-in-law very much.  She was a role model for  my daughter and me.  She was generous and very loving - especially to her family - and I was lucky and blessed enough to be loved by her too because I married her baby boy.

I haven't written a lot about her before.  She wasn't a part of our daily lives like my mom is, but she was always in our heart.

When Worker Bee and I met in college, his parents lived in the Bay Area, one of the loveliest parts of our state.  I loved going up to visit them and I think we must have gone up about once a month.  I remember being so impressed with how warm and inviting their house was.  And thus began the lessons I feel I learned from Helen (aka The Quilting Bee).  From her I knew I wanted our home to be inviting.  I knew I wanted it to feel warm.  I wanted for it to feel cozy.

At that time, she was also very into gardening.  Worker Bee shared that love with her too.  And then he shared it with me.  I learned the names of plants and how to care for them from her.

Then, shortly before Worker Bee and I got married, his parents were transferred to Ft. Worth, Texas.  And again, Helen made the house in Texas into a warm and welcoming space.  I also saw her make a new group of friends.  I've almost always lived in the same town I grew up in and my parents grew up in and my grandparents grew up in.  I marveled at how she did that.  How did she even know what to do to make new friends?

And she became a quilter in Texas.

She made beautiful quilt after beautiful quilt.  I'm not sure how many she ended up making, but each grandchild received one, and there are 11 of them.

This is the last quilt she made and she made it for Baby Bee.
The back is in Mary Engelbreit fabric - I think she might have picked that just for me!
I want you to know that she could do anything she set her mind to do.

She took cabinet making classes (I never knew that - she might have kept that one secret so I wouldn't ask her to build me a new kitchen) and learned how to build furniture.

She took classes on ornamental horticulture and worked towards getting her degree in that.  Sunset magazine came out and took pictures of her succulent Christmas tree.  She won blue ribbons for her plants at the Santa Clara County Fair.

She refinished furniture.  She reupholstered furniture.  About eleven years ago Helen and Bob (my father-in-law, he passed away in 2004) flew out to see us and I convinced them to reupholster our couch.  It was amazing!  They made such a fabulous team.

She had great style too.  As was said at the memorial service, she had sass and she had class.

After Bob died, she uprooted herself again and moved to Louisville which was closer to her oldest son and much of his family.  And she made a new group of friends again.  How did she do that again?  At the age of 74?

Helen was born in Wisconsin, then moved to Illinois (where Worker Bee was born), then to Southern California, then to Northern California, and to Texas and then Kentucky.  She made friends wherever she went, but family was first.

I didn't mention what a bridge fiend she was.  She loved to play games, but bridge was her favorite.  She tried to teach me a couple of times, but I just wasn't interested enough.  Worker Bee likes to play bridge, but who our age plays bridge?

So, today, Helen, on what would have been your 84th birthday, I am finally able to write down a tribute to you and how much you meant to all of us.  We miss you every day and especially when Baby Bee dances.  I know how much you loved to see her dance.  I imagine you dancing away in heaven with Bob (after he has cooked a gourmet dinner and dirtied every pan, utensil, and dish in the house).

Love you!

Another Bee Family Wedding...

and this one had me buzzing!

We were just down in Del Mar, California (near San Diego) for Worker Bee's nephew's wedding.

What a beautiful setting! (And it was 108º at home and 68º there so we loved the weather too.)

The wedding was on a balcony looking right out at the beach and then that area was quickly converted into the wedding dinner venue.

The tables were just spectacular!  Aren't those rosy textured tablecloths beautiful?

The bride's aunt did all the flowers.  Aren't they gorgeous?

And my favorite thing about the wedding?  It had a BEE theme!

Worker Bee told me his brother offered me his bee pin and I didn't hear him!  An opportunity missed!

I snuck home our place card for the reception.  Sneaky, hunh?

Okay, truth be told, it was not my favorite thing but I sure did love it!

Happy Wedding Mr. and Mrs. Bee Family!

What are you buzzing about?
We're buzzing about the extreme heat we're having!  114º on Monday!

What Is It About the Fall That Caused Me to Overcommit Myself?

Oh yes, I've done it again.  Too much on my plate and I won't bore you with the details....

but I had to share with you....

Baby Bee was nominated by her leadership group at her elementary school for president!

Wanted to show you her cute poster she made for the election.  She made the letters with my Cricut machine and some fabulous paper my mom found at Hobby Lobby.

She gives her speech on Friday and the student body votes a week from then.
Don't forget to vote! (And don't forget to enter my Shabby Apple giveaway! It's ending soon!)
Can you tell Baby Bee has a proud mama?
P.S.  Still working on things for the Big County Fair!  Oh my!  Wish I could share, but I can't until the fair in October!

A Bee Family Wedding

This weekend our little bee family took a 4 1/2 hour road trip to attend a wonderful family wedding.

Worker Bee's niece got married at a beautiful winery in Santa Rosa and I just have to share a few of the delightful details with you.

We took shuttle buses from the hotel to the winery.
(You might have noticed how cloudy it is - it was a bit chilly - Baby Bee and I had to run out and buy some wraps to help keep us warm - more on that later.)
We were at the St. Francis Winery and this lovely statue and garden welcomed us to the grounds.
Before the wedding started we were able to walk around and enjoy a glass of wine.  In the background you can see the beautiful tables.
As we rode in the shuttle bus over to the wedding, Baby Bee asked her uncle (father of the bride) if this was going to be a luxurious wedding and I think you can judge for yourself.  The tables were so elegant.
There were menu cards tucked in the gorgeous damask napkins.
Simple centerpieces of white roses and white hydrangeas were on each table.
And would you look at the view?

 It was stunning!
I loved the floral initials of the bride and groom.  Their colors were white and lavender with touches of silver.
This is where we danced away the evening.
These gorgeous bouquets and flower petals just added a focal point to the wedding party.

The aisle was lined with lovely white rose petals.
Such a beautiful bride and handsome groom!
I love wedding cakes, don't you?  I think they give you such a sense of the bride and groom's style.
Oh yes, this was quite a luxurious cake!
And along with this gorgeous cake I had some of the best coffee I have EVER had!  It was a medium roast French press and it was divine!  So smooth and delicious. (Leave it to me to go on and on about the coffee I had at a wedding reception. But now I have to go buy a French press.)

Couldn't resist adding this picture of a little bouquet next to the wedding cake.  Believe me, no detail was forgotten at this wedding.
Unfortunately those clouds I mentioned in earlier turned into a downpour and those gorgeous tables you saw on the lawn had to be moved into the same room of those gorgeous floral initials.
The Wedding Coordinator and her team quickly got everything moved and it was still beautiful.  Luckily the rain ended after about 20 minutes and we were able to be outside the rest of the evening.
(Don't you think being a wedding coordinator might be a fun job?  But then you hear about those Bridezillas so maybe not.)
Thank you for coming along with us to this luxurious wedding.  I think Baby Bee chose the perfect adjective to describe this wonderful family event.
And the good news?  Why Worker Bee's nephew (the bride's brother) is getting married next June!  I bet another fabulous wedding is in the making!  I'll be sure to take you along to that one too!

Just a Few Family Treasures

My mom, Sewing Bee, recently moved out of her home of 28 years to a much smaller house (the green cottage - we haven't named it yet) and she had to get rid of a lot of stuff.  As we helped her pack we came across little treasures that I was lucky enough to be able to claim for myself.
(no, not the red chair, I just thought it looked cute with the treasures)

I had never seen this checkerboard and box before.  My mom told me that this was my grandpa's and this is exactly how he kept his set of checkers.....in this match box.
There's something about the whole story that just touched me.
I can picture my grandpa (who always smelled of oil and car grease AND Doublemint gum - that combination of smells - which I don't run across very often - always takes me back to being a kid at Grandma and Grandpa's) with his grin asking my mom or her sister to come play checkers with him after a long day of working on cars.
Another treasure my brother didn't mind that I took is this barn and silo.
I can always remember it being at Grandma and Grandpa's when we were kids in the 70s.
I have no idea how old it is, but my mom didn't remember it from her childhood.  It also had barn animals and  white corral fencing, but those parts are gone now.
My mom had it in a toy basket for the grandkids to play with at her old house, but all the grandkids are too old to play with it.
Well today we're off to the Big County Fair!  Baby Bee is dancing with her dance group there.  Looking forward to having some yummy fair food.  I'll have to take pictures to share with you!

Thanks for buzzing in today!
